The fear is a consequence, not only of the vast sums of money involved nor of news of the number of large and reputable institutions that appear to be ailing, but also the result of the lack of understanding of its real causes. [...] The magnitude of the problem, however, and the far- reaching effects of any remedial action require more than ever a sober analysis of the causes of the current crisis, if future economic prosperity is to be preserved.
