The focus of this development was, as Paul Dekar said in a 1980 presentation to the Canadian Society of Church History, the 'outer story' of Canadian Christianity, emphasizing the evolution of ecclesiastical institutions, the lives and work of church leaders, and the role of the churches in the public life of the nation. [...] In addition, the History of the Christian Church in Canada reflected the ecumenical spirit of the 1960s and 1970s and the intense preoccupation with Canadian identity which was characteristic of that era: the use of 'church' instead of 'churches' in the tide signalled the authors' commitment to the ideal of Christian unity; and one of their central concerns was to identify what was distinctively C [...] The Recollet missions were tied to the network of trading alliances that, stretching along the north shore of the St Lawrence and into southern Ontario, linked such geographically far-flung peoples as the Montagnais of the Saguenay, the Algonquin along the Ottawa River, and the Huron around Georgian Bay. [...] Some people viewed the Society as the advance guard of the papacy and a threat to the Gallican liberties, the national rights of the Roman Catholic Church in France that had been acknowledged in the Concordat of 1516 between France and the papacy. [...] The Company's founder, the due de Ventadour, had sponsored the Jesuits at Quebec, and another member, Sebastien Cramoisy, the publisher of the Relations and a political client of Cardinal Richelieu, had taken part in the discussions leading to the arrival of the Augustinian sisters.
