In 1857 Friedrich Maassen, eminent pioneer in the history of the canonical literature of the Middle Ages, in the course of a long article, refers to the Bamberger Swnma 1, or the Anonymous Summa of the Codex Bambergensis 2. Two years later, in an article devoted to a study of the contribution of Paucapalea 3, under a section entitled Die Anonyme Summa zwn Decret4, in five or six pages, the same sc [...] It can only be estimated by the length of the text of the Decretum which is passed over and the normal length of the commentary within the body of a Quxstio. [...] This is true especially of the excerpts from the Decretum where the abbreviation could be of any one of the variants found in the editions of Gratian's work. [...] The principle of under- lining the parts of the text which are taken from the Decretum is badly observed especially in certain parts of the Ms. [...] Placed between the first and second parts, he uses the past tense for the first, the present for the second and the future for the third part.
