In order to remedy this deficiency, I have attempted to identify and catalogue a large number of optical manuscripts written in Latin and western vernacular languages between the twelfth and the six- teenth (or in a few instances the seventeenth) centuries. [...] What I record here is simply die results of six or seven years of intensive study of medieval and Renaissance optics, which has led me through all of the essen- tial bibliographical sources and the most important of the manuscript collections.2 It is clear that much more remains to be i For a tew works (especially medical) printed many times, I have made no attempt to examine or list all editions. [...] When the optical por- tion of a general work had an independent circulation, I have ordinarily listed only manuscripts of the optical extract; the sole exception is the case of Roger Bacon's works, where I have attempted to be complete. [...] What remains is twofold: the science of perspective or optics, which is concerned with the nature and mathematical analysis of light and vision, the rectilinear propagation, reflection, and refraction of rays, the rainbow, and (to a limited extent) the psychology of perception; and the science of ophthalmology, which deals with the anatomy and physiology of the eye and the treatment of its disease [...] The main classification is alphabetical by author;7 when the authorship of a particular work is doubtful, a question mark is placed in parentheses after the author's name (or, in cases where two or more works are assigned to an author, after the title of the doubtful work).8 For works that circulated with more than one tide, I have attempted to select the most common or most appropriate of them, b
