It therefore epitomizes several of the occupations and preoccupations of the thirteenth century, including the creation and development of alphabetical reference tools, a new and urgent emphasis upon the preaching ministry, and the evolution in the form and content of the sermon itself. [...] It draws upon the classical interests of the twelfth-century Florilegium Gallicum and Florilegium Angelicum, and of the library of Richard de Fournival; the spiritual and doctrinal interests of early thir- teenth-century Cistercians flow into the Manipulus via the Flores paradysi and the Liber exceptionum. [...] An un- derstanding of the operation of this system of publication depends upon the combined results of examinations of the written regulations of the medieval book trade, of the surviving books published by the stationers, and of the textual history of individual works produced by the trade. [...] The major works of the twelfth century, the Gloss on the Bible, the Sentences of the Lombard and the Decretum, represent ef- forts to assimilate and organize inherited written authority in systematic form. [...] It is simply that the first half of the thirteenth century provided the proper con- text, the balanced mixture of ingredients—a pressing need, the techniques with which to meet the need, and the institutional framework in which to apply the techniques of tool-making.
