Though the well-known copy of the English Stimulus amoris and The Poor Caitiff which is now MS Downside 26542 is written in a hand not identical with that of A, the two manuscripts resemble one another so much, in handwriting, rubrication, lay-out and contents, that it is hard to suppose that they are not the products of the same scriptorium. [...] The general character of A, as an an- thology of less popular spiritual classics which comprises the unique copies of Julian's short text and of the English Ruysbroek Treatise of Per- fection has previously been remarked.9 That the Downside manuscript should contain Latin extracts from the Horologium and from Mechtild of Hackborn is evidence of the same kind of connoisseurship. [...] It is an anthology of Augustine Baker's Englishings, primarily for the benefit of the Cambrai nuns, of a wide selection from mediaeval and post-Reformation spiritual classics, and its chief importance is that it indicates the probability that we must thank Baker, as will be shown below, for the preservation of a complete long text of Julian and for its study in the seventeenth century, culminating [...] II SCRIBES AND OWNERS OF MANUSCRIPTS AND OF THE PRINTED TEXT 1 A It has already been stated that all that we know certainly about the ownership of A is that it bears the monogram of James Grenehalgh, and that this does not necessarily mean that A was in the Sheen monastic library or privately owned there. [...] The prefatory epistle To the Reader' in the Cressy 1670 edition states that it has been produced at the expense of 'a more Venerable Abbot of our Nation'; and there is a marginal note to this, The V(ery) R(everend) F(ather)Jo(hn) Guscoyn L(ord) Abbot of Lambspring'.
