She brought to the work a keen understanding of political and economic inequities and of the social problems that result in the imprisonment of women. [...] These women’s stories span the three decades, early 1970s to early twenty-first century, that have been the era of the second wave of women’s liberation (following the first wave of suffragists at the turn of the last century). [...] In the 1970s the average Stanford-Binet iq score of prison- ers at the California Institution for Women was 110, which is the top end of average in the general population (with some prisoners at the genius level and others mentally disabled). [...] Prisoners also organized during the 1970s, protesting the dis- criminatory, destructive policies and practices of criminal justice systems, from the point of arrest on through the courts and in the prisons. [...] Women volunteered to help with the organizing work of rallies, conferences and other events, but almost all of the speakers were men and all the issues dis- cussed were specific to men’s experience—even in the rare instance when a woman was speaking.
