The administration of wills and estates on reserves is a complex matter, with implications for land management, land tenure, citizenship, matrimonial property, adoptions, and the solemnization of marriages, among other aspects of reserve life. The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development ("the Committee") became aware of issues relating to the administration of wills and estates on reserves during its examination of Bill C-428, Indian Act Amendment and Replacement Act.
