The Killam Trusts The Killam Trusts were established in 1965 under the Will of Dorothy Johnston Killam for the benefit of Dalhousie University, Montreal Neurological Institute of McGill University, University of Alberta, The University of Calgary, The University of British Columbia, and The Canada Council for the Arts. [...] It has been said and may be true that I was born somewhat of a chimera with the eyes of a dreamer, the enquiring mind of a scholar, the heart of a physician and the gut instinct of an entrepreneur. [...] To many observers, it was the first time in the history of Ontario that the provincial government seemed to accept the responsibility to support research, probably because they saw the potential of knowledge-based industries as an economic opportunity for the province. [...] And to put an exclamation mark on the importance of translation to the province – the chair of the Ontario Research Fund is the Dean of Western’s Ivey School of Business. [...] Do members of our research community understand the imperative of translation and that, in the future, the new balance of trade may very well be measured (as suggested by a recent report of the Canadian International Council) by the value of our intellectual property – of which they are the producers?
